Ready to give golf a try? Here are some different options, because everyone learns different!
How to Prepare & What to Expect for Your First Lesson
​Starting golf for the first time can feel intimidating, but don't worry—we're here to make your first lesson fun, relaxed, and enjoyable.
​Wear comfortable athletic clothing that allows you to move freely. Athletic shoes are perfectly fine, golf shoes are not required.

If you already own golf clubs, bring them along. If you don't have a set yet, that's completely okay! We have clubs available for you to borrow.

Giving yourself a little extra time helps you get checked in, meet your instructor, and settle in before your lesson begins.
Come With an Open Mind

Your lesson begins with a conversation about your goals, experience level, and what you'd like to get out of golf. Whether you're here to learn a new hobby, spend time with friends, or improve your game, we'll tailor the lesson to you.
Learn the Fundamentals
Your instructor will introduce the basics of golf, including grip, posture, stance, and swing fundamentals. Everything is explained in a simple, easy-to-understand way.
Hit Some
Golf Balls
You'll spend time practicing your swing while receiving personalized feedback and tips to help you improve. The focus is on learning—not perfection.
Ask Questions
Curious about golf etiquette, equipment, or what to do next? This is the perfect time to ask! Your instructor is here to help you feel comfortable and confident.
After Your Lesson

Before you leave, your instructor will discuss what you learned and recommend the next steps based on your goals. This may include another private lesson, a group class, practice suggestions, or beginner-friendly events to help you continue improving.
Most importantly, you'll leave with a better understanding of golf and the confidence to keep learning.

Basic Golf Terminology
Golf has its own language, and hearing unfamiliar terms can make the game seem more complicated than it really is.
Don't worry—you don't need to memorize everything before your first lesson. This guide introduces some of the most common golf terms you'll hear on the course and at the driving range.
Golf Course Basics
Tee Box (Teeing Area)
​The area where every hole begins. This is where you'll hit your first shot on each hole.
Fairway
The short, well-maintained grass between the tee box and the green. This is where golfers try to land their tee shots.
Green
The smooth, closely mowed area surrounding the hole. Golfers use a putter here to roll the ball into the cup.
Rough
The longer grass surrounding the fairway. Shots from the rough are usually more challenging.
Hole (Cup)
The actual hole in the ground where the flagstick is placed. The goal is to get your ball into the hole in as few strokes as possible.​​
Hazard
An obstacle designed to make the hole more challenging, such as a bunker or water.
Sand Bunker
A sand-filled hazard that requires a different technique than hitting from grass.
Common Golf Terms
Fore!
A warning shouted when a golf ball may be heading toward other people.
Ball Marker
A small object used to mark the position of your golf ball on the green while another player putts.
Lie
The position of your golf ball on the ground. A good lie makes a shot easier, while a difficult lie can make it more challenging.
Mulligan
An unofficial "do-over" shot. Mulligans are often used during casual rounds but are not allowed under the official rules of golf.
Handicap
A number that represents a golfer's playing ability, allowing players of different skill levels to compete fairly.
Tee
A small peg used to raise the golf ball off the ground for your first shot on a hole.
Divot
A piece of grass and soil removed during a swing. It's good golf etiquette to replace or repair your divots whenever possible.
Clinic
A golf clinic is a group learning session led by one or more instructors. Clinics are a fun, social, and affordable way to improve your game while learning alongside other golfers.

A shot intended to land on the green.
Scoring Terms
Par
The expected number of strokes it should take to complete a hole.
Birdie
One stroke under par.
Chip
A short shot played near the green that spends more time rolling than flying.
Eagle
Two strokes under par.
Pitch
A higher, softer shot that flies farther than a chip and stops more quickly.
Bogey
One stroke over par.
Putt
A stroke made on the green using a putter.
Double Bogey
Two strokes over par.
